Car and Driver magazine recently released the results of its
2009 summer tire tests and ranked the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Star Spec first in its “Best in Test.”
The magazine elected 9 tire models depending on a price limit of $140 each
and in size 225/45R17. Because tires from Michelin North America
Inc., Goodyear and Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. didn’t fit these
criteria, Car and Driver said it turned to brands from their
subsidiaries and low-cost brands such as Hankook, Kumho, Ling
Long and Falken.
The test entered 3 categories, with points per division, including in price, dry and wet braking.
Car and Driver made the tests at Tire Rack’s test track
in South Bend, Ind., where its drivers performed three different
driving manuevers: braking from 50 mph to a standstill; laps
around a 0.3-mile autocross course; and runs around a
200-foot-diameter skidpad.
After Dunlop Tires, the following rounded out the Best in Test in order of most
points accumulated:
* Hankook Ventus V12 EVO;
* Kumho Ecsta XS;
* Bridgestone Potenza RE760;
* BFGoodrich G-Force KDW;
*Yokohama S.Drive;
* Falken Azenis RT-615;
* Nitto Invo; and
* Ling Long L688.
Inthe magazine’s price comparison-in its August edition-the Ling Long L688 ranked tops with an average selling price of $57, followed by the Hankook Ventus V12 EVO at $106. The Yokohama S.Drive’s typical price was $115 and Nitto Invo’s $117.
